About this deal

Earwax is a complex mixture of substances, mainly consisting of dead skin cells, hair, and secretions from the ceruminous and sebaceous glands in the ear canal. These glands work in unison to produce a waxy, oily substance, known as earwax. Pre-treatment eardrops use a variety of active ingredients. Some are water based; others are oil-based or contain sodium bicarbonate or hydrogen peroxide. While this tool—which looks like a drill—may appear promising, it’s important to keep in mind that ear canals aren’t a straight cylinder. We asked leading expert, Kevin Munro, Professor of Audiology at the University of Manchester, to assess how effective and appropriate a selection of products were for home use.

People can follow the steps below to try ear irrigation. They should use a syringe containing clean water at room temperature. It may seem tempting, but Professor Munro had concerns. He said it contained no guidance on safe use and could cause serious damage if not used correctly, for example by inadvertently inserting it too deeply (or without the plastic/rubber tip) into the ear canal, damaging the skin or perforating the ear drum. Sit upright with a towel on the shoulder to capture water that drains from the ear. Some people may also place a basin underneath the ear to catch the water. Dr. Schweitzer also recommends kits that can remove the wax without worsening the plug of wax (which can get inadvertently knotted into hair cells). “Professionals usually use a lighted loop tool to pull out a buildup after ‘irrigating’ with a sterile solution,” he says. Should you want to combine several techniques for a seamless removal, you can combine drops or a liquid solution like hydrogen peroxide — such as the QISXROVY Ear-Cleaning Kit — to break up the hard wax, and then use a tool like the Ototek Loop Ear Wax Removal Device to scoop out the pieces. You should only follow this method if you’re 100% certain that you have no infections or perforations in your eardrum. This ear wax cleaning kit pairs liquid drops, powered by carbamide peroxide (a water-soluble cousin to hydrogen peroxide), to soften tough ear wax before you flush it with water. It also comes with a bulb, which helps remove any excess moisture by suctioning it out with manual air pressure (via squeezing it). The drops also create a tiny lather, so you feel like it's working, too. With drops like these, it may help to lie down for a few minutes after applying so the liquid doesn’t run out of your ear before it breaks up the wax. We love that this kit comes with every component you’ll need to perform the cleaning. This version uses a saline solution to loosen ear wax and flush it out, and it even comes with a basin and towel for easy clean-up. (Plus, you'll also get an ear bulb to remove any excess water.) Some users said it worked better than other products they used that were almost twice the cost. When you sit up, blot the auricle, the outer portion of the ear, with tissue to remove any residue. Repeat the process on the other ear if it’s also affected. In most cases, the instructions will recommend that you use the drops more than once a day over the course of a few days to fully remove all the wax. Ingredients: Ear softening drops usually contain mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin, hydrogen peroxide, and/or carbamide peroxide. Some drops rely on a blend of natural extracts like garlic, St. John’s wort, mullein, and calendula to soften the wax. Formulas with carbamide peroxide are very effective and often recommended by doctors and pharmacists. Both hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide employ a foaming action that works extremely well in softening hardened earwax.

Understanding your earwaxcan provide insights into your ear health and guide appropriate care and cleaning practices. Watery Earwax This is something we recommend if the wax is particularly hard,” Adunka says. “It will soften it up and then make extraction—which should only be done in the doctor’s office—much easier.” Many earwax removal kits with softening drops also include a tool for irrigating the ear. After you’ve given the drops time to work, flushing the ear with warm water helps to wash the loosened wax from the ear and provide faster results than just using the drops alone. There’s the Axel Glade Spade—a tiny spade equipped with a camera that allows users to watch via an app on their phone as they scoop the wax from the ear canal. There are irrigation kits that are purported to flush the earwax out. Or you could try to flush your ear canal out with a syringe instead.

You insert the flexible tip, which has spiral grooves, into the ear canal and rotate, hoping, in the process, to scoop up ear wax. Eardrops, some of which are sold under the brand name Debrox, earned a nod of approval from the doctor.

Tips

Emily J. Taylor, AuD, F-AAA, audiologist and owner of Taylor Listening Center in Baltimore, says that at-home ear irrigation is a relatively safe option for people to try at home if they wish.

If you see wax on your earbuds or wired headphones, then you might have buildup. Simply seeing it doesn’t necessarily mean you have buildup. Although it's probably a sign that you should break out that earbud cleaning kit. “People are now coming in with pictures of their ear canal that they’ve taken on their smartphones, ‘proving’ their wax,” Dr. Chandrasekhar says. “Unfortunately for them, the ear canal is not straight and they have often just taken a picture of the wall of the canal, which may have a little wax on it — but the lumen, or opening, of the canal is just fine.” If you try one of our recommended cleaning kits, you’ll be able to tell right away if there’s buildup, since there will either be wax that leaves your ear, or there won’t be. The Power of Three: Wush features a massaging triple jet stream with 3 pressure settings, from a gentle clean to wax removal. He noted that there is little evidence that one type of ear drop is generally better than any other, and there is only weak evidence that pre-treatment drops on their own are enough to cause ear wax to soften and be expelled from the ear – and only in a small proportion of people. He added: ‘In unskilled hands this could cause serious damage ... I am amazed that this product and similar ones are available to the lay person.’ When it comes to cleaning your ears at home, there are several different methods and a huge range of misconceptions. Following the wrong advice can permanently damage your hearing, so it’s important to take proper care if you do decide to clean your ears at home.It is recommended you use a dropper while lying your head on one side for a few minutes to let the oil work its way through your ear canal(s). However, there is some concern among doctors that ear irrigation could cause eardrum perforation, and a hole in the eardrum would allow water into the middle portion of the ear. Using an irrigation device that manufacturers have created specifically to irrigate the ear may help minimize this risk. More broadly, the clinical evidence says that inserting foreign bodies into the ear canal is potentially dangerous and can cause injuries to the ear canal or ear drum. Private ear wax removal options can be pricey, so it’s no surprise people are attempting DIY treatments, but our snapshot investigation found that there are products you'd be wise to avoid.
